| How to land a job as a Community Manager.
Being a good Community Manager is a lot like throwing a good party. Do you know how to show people a good time? Good. Here's how to get paid to do it ...
#1 Be a professional socialite: You're a public figure now. Much like the Paris Hiltons and Ashton Kutchers of the world, it's your moral obligation to know where the cool kids go and make sure that you're there, too. Daniela Bolzmann is a perfect example. She knew nothing about being a Community Manager, but was able to talk her way into a job by attending all of the cool tweet ups, social media clubs and online communities where she knew that she could build a network + find all of the knowledge that she needed to succeed. #2 Be a digital philanthropist: You're going to do a lot of stuff for free. Don't like that? Quit now! Communities are all about giving. The more you focus on helping people, the more you're going to get back. I suggest that you find an online community that you really love and offer a few hours of free work per week to their overburdened Community Manager. And trust me, they do have work for you. They may not give you a job, but they'll give you experience + a nice recommendation when you need one. #3 Be a pioneer: Don't wait for a new community to pop up. Create one. Did you know that that Coca-Cola's official Facebook community was started by guys that didn't work for Coca-Cola? It's true. So find a brand (or a niche) that is behind the times and build something for them. Make it a brand that you're passionate about. The Coca-Cola guys were able to amass millions of fans because they loved Coke. You're going to succeed because you love your brand, too. Ryan Paugh is the Community Director at Brazen Careerist. His #1 passion is connecting people and helping them reach their goals. Beyond helping individuals in his community find success, he helps organizations make their brands about their customers again through building online communities.
